ABOUT US

It was my passion to open a salsa school, not just to teach and offer dance lessons, but to impart a passion for dance and life. In Cuba, you experience an energy and zest for life at every corner you turn, a connection to yourself and others that is not easily found elsewhere.

Here at La Rumba Cuban Dance Company my goal is to live and dance with that passion. My company embodies everything we believe in - roots, enjoyment, commitment. My mission is to introduce a different mindset about dance and music, dancing from the heart not the head and how to really feel the music while keeping a strong focus on technique.

Alexis Mora Blanco

Dancer/Principal Dancer, Choreographer, Entertainer

Surrounded by the rich tropical rhythms in Havana, Cuba, Alexis discovered his passion for dancing at just five years old. He entered his first dance competition at the age of seven, where his talent was recognized and won first place for his unique 'Michael Jackson Style Salsa'. This inspired him to pursue his dream and love of dance and began studying Cuban dance throughout his childhood and teenage years. Through his commitment and determination, Alexis made many achievements in his professional dance career. In a well known salsa competition that was filmed for TV, he placed 1st after dancing a 1-hour long competition for salsa and casino rueda. He then went on to dance in the Comparsa Jovenes del Este, a dance group who perform in the Carnaval in Havana, and won second place out of 1000 dancers. Alexis was highly sought after by many dance companies and began teaching and performing for the Tropimar Dance Company and 7 Potencias Dance Company, focusing on Afro Cuban Folklore, Rumba, Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Son, Mambo, Pilon and various other native Cuban dances. Alexis won 1st place yet again in another competition, this time in the Festival de Raices Africanas Wemilere in 2004, the most important and recognized Folklore Festival in Cuba at the time. His training and hard work was recognized when he was granted a signed teaching certificate from Juan Gomez, the president of "Circulo de Fundadores del Estilo Casino y la Rueda" and the Director of Rueda de Casino, one of the original youths who developed the fundamental steps and movements of this dance form that has grown to become a true national passion. Alexis made the journey north to bring his love of dance and unique style to Canada, and founded La Rumba Cuban Dance Company. Alexis has also taught at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Absolute Dance as well as Schools around the city. He has also instructed various workshops including Afro Cuban, Rumba, Salsa leading two ladies, Casino Rueda, Styling and Footwork.
